Took a moment to tell her I was buying an extra copy for a friend who was also from her hometown, and who had introduced me to her books. The author took the time to think for a moment, then wrote a personalized message to my friend, thanking her for the introduction. It made a huge impression on me. Filing this away for when I am famous! ;)Juliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17519183913166843527noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1043029920403749082.post-41066916621846749112019-06-08T01:07:09.110-04:002019-06-08T01:07:09.110-04:00Thanks so much for the insightful reply! Yes, the ...Thanks so much for the insightful reply! Yes, the author has time to think up (in advance) an appropriate comment. For his zombie books, Jonathan Maberry writes "Aim for the head!"
Tony Conawayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07256198676368979247noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1043029920403749082.post-27157006106290866602019-06-07T19:53:21.131-04:002019-06-07T19:53:21.131-04:00Once again, an interesting topic and one all autho...Once again, an interesting topic and one all authors should think about. When people buy a book FROM YOU, they are buying more than the book. They want the autograph, they want to support you, they want to feel a personal connection. Otherwise, they could whip out the phone and buy it at a discount from you-know-where and have it delivered tomorrow...or even before the signing event is over, in some cases!

It's a shame that you have to TELL the author to write a note. Unless you are Jimmy Carter with a line around the block and two hours to sign a couple hundred books (he did when I went to get a book signed by him), YOU HAVE THE TIME TO WRITE SOMETHING. Most authors have a handful of lines they think up in advance that match the book's theme or genre. And even if you have only known the person for ten minutes, there's probably something in the conversation you could spit back in a line. After all, YOU ARE A WRITER.

To every author who wants to build their platform and audience: your job has just started when you get the book published. Signing the book and writing a message is the best way you can make your book a personal connection between you and the reader.

Oh and if you want to think of it from a selfish perspective: it may be harder for a buyer to make the decision to sell the book used if you've inscribed it with their name and a personal note. That takes one more used copy off the market, who can then become a buyer of a new copy at full price. Main Line Writers Grouphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14597311974051994145noreply@blogger.com
